Twenty years in tech.
Now in the field.
Bay State Field Ops is a one-person consultancy by design. I help owner-operators across New England get the software side of their plumbing, HVAC, or electrical business working the way it should — without the noise, the upsell, or the multi-month enterprise rollout.
Book a strategy callWhy I started Bay State Field Ops.
After two decades helping technology companies build, ship, and operate software, I kept noticing the same thing every time I called a contractor for my own house: small trade businesses doing excellent work, run by smart people, drowning in paperwork and missed callbacks. Not because they're not capable — because nobody set up their tools to actually help.
Plumbing, HVAC, and electrical shops are the backbone of every neighborhood in New England. They keep houses warm in February and dry in March. They deserve software that fits the work — not enterprise platforms built for 50-truck operations, and not generic CRMs built for sales teams. Jobber and Housecall Pro are genuinely great tools for small shops. The trick is setting them up right.
I work with one shop at a time, in person, in your office. No junior consultants. No sales engineer hand-off. No partner channel taking a cut. If you hire Bay State Field Ops, you get me — for the setup, for the training, and for the monthly check-ins after. That's the whole company. By design.
Four principles I hold to.
Your shop's reality first.
Every shop runs differently. I learn yours before I touch the software — how the phone rings, how jobs get dispatched, what the techs actually do in the field. The setup wraps around your work, not the other way around.
Honest recommendations.
I'm a partner with both Jobber and Housecall Pro and earn a referral commission either way — so I have no incentive to push one over the other. If Jobber fits your shop, that's what I'll set up. If it's Housecall Pro, same. If you don't need me at all, I'll tell you that too.
Built to be handed off.
The goal is not for you to depend on me. The goal is for your office lead and your techs to own the system. I document everything, train the people who use it, and stay close while you get comfortable.
One shop at a time.
I take on a small number of clients each year so the work is hands-on. That means a wait sometimes — and a setup that's actually finished when we shake hands, not three months of "I'll get to that."
A good fit looks like this.
I'd rather tell you up front than three weeks into a project. Here's where the work lands well — and where you'd be better served elsewhere.
If this sounds like your shop, let's talk.
- You run a 1–10 person plumbing, HVAC, or electrical shop in New England.
- You're on Jobber or Housecall Pro — or trying to decide between them.
- You're willing to spend a few weeks getting the setup right, once.
- You want your office lead and techs trained, not just yourself.
- You're ready to actually use the software after we set it up.
If this is more your situation, I'll point you elsewhere.
- You want someone to run the back office for you long-term — that's a different service.
- You're a 20+ person shop. ServiceTitan or a full operations consultant will serve you better.
- You want the cheapest possible thing. I do real setup work; it's not the budget option.
- You're outside the trades I focus on (no roofing, landscaping, or commercial).
- You're looking for a course, a community, or a templates pack. I don't sell any of those.
Let's talk about your shop.
